Our Purpose & Promise

So why do we sell groceries? We know that the items on your grocery list represent what’s going on in your life right now. And when you’re juggling everything on your plate, being able to get the food you love for how you live is so valuable. We’re here to help you find small wins every day, because when you can check a few things off your list, you can get back to enjoying what's important. You’re working hard to make life work, and we’re working hard to help you feed all life’s moments.

Caring for our Communities

At the center of all that we do is a real commitment to caring for our communities. We believe it’s our responsibility to help combat hunger in the cities and towns we serve. We do this through food distribution events, by donating food from our stores to food banks and by sponsoring food pantries in local schools to help students remain nourished. We invite our customers to join our giving, and every year they help donate millions of dollars to fighting hunger, pediatric cancer care and research and supporting our troops.

We also proudly stand for inclusion and opportunity for all, and we’re committed to making a difference by supporting key partners who are helping those in underrepresented communities. We’re building long-term relationships with these partners to drive real change:

  • BU Center for Antiracist Research
  • GLAAD
  • Home Base
  • King Boston
  • NAACP
  • National Black Justice Coalition
  • OutRight
  • Quincy Asian Resources
  • The Dimock Center
  • The Greater New England Minority Supplier Diversity Council
  • The Trevor Project

Building a Sustainable Future

At Stop & Shop, we always keep sustainability in mind when making key decisions – it’s like every day is Earth Day! We are an industry leader in reducing plastic bag waste through the Billion Bag Reduction program. Food that is not sold or donated to a local Feeding America Food Pantry from our stores and warehouses is recycled and converted to green energy to power our distribution center in Freetown, MA. We offer Volta charging stations in many of our parking lots. And our Restore program offsets fuel emissions from our fuel locations by planting trees and investing in local environmental programs.

We help sustain local farms and businesses by sourcing regional items. All seafood from our service counters is sustainably and responsibly sourced. We save almost 2 million trees each year by recycling cardboard. We have bigger goals too, including sourcing and selling only cage-free eggs by 2025 and reducing food loss and waste in our operations by 50 percent by the year 2030.

Driving Supplier Diversity

We are focused on building and maintaining strong partnerships with certified, diverse-owned businesses. This is true for both the products on our shelves and our other partners that help keep our business going. We purposefully include diverse suppliers in our everyday vendor review and bid processes. We are always looking for additional services and products from qualified, diverse-owned suppliers. Certified, diverse-owned suppliers would typically fall into the following categories: Minority-owned, Woman-owned, LGBT-owned and Veteran-owned designation.
